Abstract:

Use of ICT for teaching and learning has received a lot of attention in the last two decades. The present study is an attempt to understand the use of ICT, more specifically, use of computers among secondary school teachers for teaching and learning. The main focus of the study is to elucidate teachers’ perceptions and competency in relation to actual use computers in classroom teaching. The study was carried out among secondary school teachers working in Puducherry, India. Teachers’ perception towards use of computer was found to be favorable. Age, gender, training in computers, teaching subject did not show significant difference in the teachers’ perception on use of computers. However, the actual use of computer by teachers seems to differ significantly by age, gender, computer ownership, teaching subject, teachers’ competency, and training. It is concluded that home access to computers, skill training and competency of teachers are the main determinants of integration of ICT in school education
