A Study on the Educational Experiences of the Children with Disabilities Studying in Special Schools in Guwahati City, Assam

Abstract:

Education is an inherent right for every child irrespective of their caste, class, status, religion etc. Article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) enumerates that everyone has the right to education and it shall be directed to the full development of the human personality and to the strengthening of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. Though there are numerous provisions for providing free and compulsory education to the children but even in the 21st century it is a challenging task when it comes to educating a disabled child. The present study has largely to deal with understanding the educational experiences of the students with disabilities studying in special schools in Guwahati city , Assam. The study is based on both primary and secondary data. Purposive sampling has been used to select the samples. The researcher feels that the findings of the study would give a clear scenario of the status of education of children with disability in the society. On the basis of the research findings suggestions are also given to overcome the challenges for proper implementation of quality education in special schools. Thus, it is hoped that this study will act as a source of reference for any future initiatives to be taken up in this field and measures can be taken for further emphasizing the practice of imparting quality education in the society and also for the social development of the state
