Abstract:
At different time throughout the history, those who shape policy have had varying beliefs about the importance of papaya and
locally available herbs. Carica papaya belongs to caricaceae family and it is commonly known as ‘papaya’. It is used as antiinflammatory,
antioxidant, diuretic, antibacterial, abortifacient, vermifuge, hypoglycemic, antifungal activity, antihelmenthic
and immunomodulatory etc. Scientific evidences suggest their versatile biological function that supports its traditional use in
different diseases. Since the beginning of human civilization, a number of medicinal plants have been used in the traditional
system of medicine, aiming to maintain health and to cure diseases. As plants produce a lot of antioxidants they can represent a
source of novel compounds with promising antioxidant activity. The purpose of this work is to present a minireview of the
potential of spices and aromatic herbs for the development of functional foods.
